Vedic astrology divides your life into long planetary periods called dashas, and at any moment one of them is running. Enter your birth details above to see your current mahadasha and antardasha. It is free and needs no account.
Vimshottari is a 120 year cycle of nine planets, always in the same order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. Few people live through all of it.
Where you enter depends on your birth nakshatra, since each star belongs to one of the nine planets. How far the Moon had already moved through that star decides how much of the first period was left when you were born.
Think of the mahadasha as the chapter and the antardasha as the scene within it. Each mahadasha holds nine antardashas, starting with its own planet and following the same order, with lengths in the same proportions as the full cycle.
So a Saturn mahadasha with a Venus antardasha reads differently from one with a Rahu antardasha, because the long theme stays while the current flavour changes. How either one plays out also depends on where those planets sit in your own chart.
Your starting balance comes from the Moon's exact position, and the Moon moves about half a degree every hour. An error of an hour can shift your dasha dates by months, so give the most accurate time you can.
A dasha is a period set at birth that runs in the background for years. A transit is where a planet is in the sky today. The dasha sets the theme, and transits tend to show when parts of it become active.
None is good or bad on its own. A planet's period depends on what that planet rules and how it is placed in your chart, so the same dasha can feel very different for two people.
