About this tool
Why it needs an exact birth time
The whole zodiac rises over the horizon in about a day, so a new sign comes up roughly every two hours. A birth recorded as 'around 8' could be either of two signs if the change falls close by.
Your place of birth matters for the same reason, because the horizon depends on where you stand. The best source is a birth certificate or hospital record. A time remembered by family is often rounded, so check it if you can.
What the ascendant decides
The lagna is your first house, and with whole-sign houses every other house is counted from it. Career, marriage and family all depend on this count, which is why an astrologer will ask for your time before anything else.
It also names your lagna lord, the planet that rules your rising sign. Two people born in the same city on the same day often share a Moon sign, yet a few hours apart they can have completely different houses.
Rising sign questions
What is the difference between my rising sign and my moon sign?
Your rising sign describes how you meet the world and sets the houses of your chart. Your moon sign describes your inner emotional life. Most people have different signs for the two, and both are worth knowing.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Please do not guess, because the answer may simply be wrong. Try a birth certificate, a hospital record or an old horoscope first. Until then, your moon sign and nakshatra are much more forgiving of an uncertain time.
Is the lagna the same as the Western ascendant?
It is the same idea, the sign rising in the east, but Vedic astrology measures it against the stars. Because of the difference between the two zodiacs, your lagna is often one sign earlier than a Western chart would show.
